Getting around
Loop 303 runs through Surprise, connecting to U.S. Route 60 within the city and continuing on toward Interstate 10 and Interstate 17. U.S. Route 60 becomes Grand Avenue at its Loop 303 junction in Surprise. Bell Road, a major east-west arterial owned in part by the city, has its west end at Sun Valley Parkway in Surprise and crosses Loop 303 and US 60 within city limits.

The city grew substantially over recent decades, from 30,848 residents in 2000 to 117,517 in 2010 and 143,148 in 2020. Surprise was originally subdivided to build inexpensive houses for agricultural workers on what was then a 1-square-mile parcel of land.
